My first Yelp Elite Event at The Stand in Pasadena rocked
As some of you know, I recently returned to writing Yelp reviews, after a long period of absence from the site. And shortly afterwards, via Yelp message, I was set up on a blind date. Well, that’s not the only thing that’s happened since I came back. I have now also become part of the LA East Yelp Elite Squad.
What does that mean? It means that my power and authority in the world of online reviews and general galavanting is growing to epic proportions. It also means that sometimes I’ll get to go to special Yelp Elite Events. This month I attended my first YEE at The Stand in Pasadena, and I was not disappointed.
If you’re not familiar with The Stand, it’s a casual diner-like affair with juiced-up spins on American standards like burgers, hot dogs, and chicken sandos. As of this typing there are six locations around the LA area. Listen up: if you read not one more word of this blog post, I will tell you right now: they have a French Onion Soup Burger, and you should eat it or you’re a fool.
The thing that stood out to me the most was how flipping friendly the staff is, even when their restaurant is packed in wall-to-wall with all of us Yelpers taking non-stop food photos. They joked around with us, smiling and telling us about each dish. It felt like the first time I hopped in a Lyft and got a fist bump from the driver, and it kind of worked for me.
Note: there is a heavy presence of avocado on the menu. So they kind of already had me right there.
I ate more than any self-respecting human being should ever consume, but I do not feel ashamed. From the Seared Ahi Salad with crispy onion strings to the Guac-on-Fire Dog with pickled peppers, nothing was gonna slow this train down. Well, except maybe to grab a beer. But then right back on the train.
Speaking of beer, the selection was even better than I expected. I had a Dale’s Pale Ale and a Stone Delicious IPA, but there were several other solid options on tap. I spied Golden Road Blonde, Goose Island IPA, Mama’s Little Yella Pils, Cali Creamin' Vanilla Cream Ale…there was also a coffee porter of some type, and I can’t remember exactly what it was because I’m the worst.
We’ll see what my next Yelp event holds, but if it’s anything like this one was, I will definitely not be upset. Which, if you know me, is a pretty big compliment.
But holy hell that French Onion Soup Burger.
